ABKHAZIA

A PARADISE ON BROKEN LEGS

I spent some time in the breakaway region of Abkhazia. During the Soviet times it was considered to be the Riviera of the East due to its lush landscapes and sub-tropical climate. The collapse of the Soviet Union followed by a bloody civil war left the region in ruins. These scars can still be seen all over the region almost 30 years after the conflict. At the moment the only way for it to stay alive somehow are Russian tourists flocking to Abkhazia every summer..
